Randerson welcomes Eisteddfod back to Cardiff after 30 years3.48.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 1st Aug 2008
Jenny Randerson, Welsh Liberal Democrat Cardiff Central AM, is looking forward to welcoming thousands of competitors and visitors from all over Wales to the Cardiff and District 2008 National Eisteddfod. Local AM, Jenny Randerson said: "As former Culture Minister, I know how important the Eisteddfod is for Wales and the people of Wales. It is a massive manifestation of the pride that the people of Wales have in their history, culture and themselves. "Although the competitions are held in Welsh, it is possible for you to enjoy everything on offer with the translation facilities that are available for non-Welsh speakers. Being an elementary Welsh speaker myself has never stopped me from enjoying the music, singing and dancing. The Eisteddfod is renowned for the wide variety of events it stages and I'm sure that this year will be no exception. "The Eisteddfod regularly attracts in excess of 150,000 people and this huge influx of people to the city will be a great boost to the economy of the region. I just hope the sun will keep its hat on! Peter Black, Welsh Liberal Democrat Culture spokesperson said: "The Eisteddfod is wonderful celebration of Welsh culture, folk, music, dancing, prose and drama. It is a shop window for everything that is great about our country. The Eisteddfod should promote itself further afield so that people from all across the UK and Europe can enjoy the talents Wales has to offer. "We should use it to welcome the world to Wales, and for the World to see what we have to offer. "Simon Cowell is in for a treat if he ever makes it back to Cardiff!"
