Valley Lines Services are often cramped at peak times

Welsh Lib Dem Assembly Member for Cardiff Central and Shadow Minister for Transport, Jenny Randerson AM today challenged the First Minister, Rhodri Morgan to call for extra infrastructure investment to tackle projected increases in rail travel in and around Cardiff.

Network Rail have predicted an increase in passenger numbers in Cardiff of 40% over the next ten years, but pinch points at Cardiff Queen Street and the need for improvements to the rail bridge over Newport Road mean, rail services may increasingly be overstretched.

Jenny Randerson said: "The prospect of a faster link to London and the increase in projected passenger numbers are to be welcomed. Anything that shows people are getting out of their cars is great but I am concerned that the infrastructure in and around Queen Street station is bursting at the seams.

Investing in the infrastructure of Cardiff is central to improving services for the valleys and I would like to see massive investment in order to make rail services as attractive to people as possible."
