Students deserve huge congratulations and support, but University scramble shows need for change - Randerson2.19.15pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 21st Aug 2009
Commenting on today's A-Level results and reports of shortages in places at Higher Education institutions, Welsh Lib Dem Shadow Education Minister, Jenny Randerson AM said: "Every student deserves our warmest congratulations and best wishes. This is the end of two years of hard work for many young people. "This is the first time in many years where school and college leavers are facing a serious recession after results day. Thousands of talented students who have just missed out on the grades they needed are now going to face a scramble for their future due to the shortage of university places available. "We are seeing huge rises in applications across every Welsh Higher Education Institution and in coming weeks there are likely to be many personal stories of heartbreak as the demand for places is unlikely to be met. "This shows that there is an urgent need for a full and frank debate on the future of Higher Education and the pathways into it." Ends.
