Unemployment went up fast than any other part of the UK, leaving serious questions for Labour and Plaid Cymru.

Commenting on the release of figures showing a brutal rise in unemployment in Wales of 1.6% to 9.1%, against a much smaller UK average, Welsh Lib Dem Shadow Economy Minister, Jenny Randerson AM said:

"These figures show the error of the Labour-Plaid Government's triumphalism in recent months on their handling of the economy.

"This was the biggest rise of all areas of the UK, and shows that the recession is now set to be harder, deeper and longer for people and businesses in Wales. While other areas of the UK have clearly seen a slowing in the increase in unemployment, here in Wales, it is speeding up.

"There is something seriously wrong with the Welsh economy, and these figures show the effect this is having on Welsh families and workers.

"Essentially, if you live in Wales, you now are more likely to be out of work, more likely to be economically inactive, and more likely to face serious financial problems as a result. It is high time the Labour-Plaid Government got a grip, if they are right in claiming that the recession is bottoming out then why are there more people losing their jobs than ever before?"
